Medgate, one of Europe's largest telemedicine providers, connects 2.5 million patients to doctors remotely across Switzerland and Germany—handling approximately 3,000 consultations daily during peak winter periods. The company operates critical healthcare infrastructure that requires both agility and absolute dependability. Working with OWT—a Swisscom company and Switzerland's leading technology consultancy—Medgate deployed Claude Code in a three-month pilot with four teams and approximately 15 engineers, and has since decided to roll it out across the organization.
With Claude Code during the pilot phase, Medgate achieved:
- Up to 80% faster test case development
- 50-99% reduction in delivery time for some development features
- 90% faster bug resolution through automated root cause analysis
- 50% improvement in code quality with AI-enhanced PR reviews
The challenge
Millions of patients across Switzerland and Germany rely on Medgate to connect them with doctors—through mobile apps, phone consultations, and integrations with healthcare systems. That infrastructure has to work every time.
Medgate's engineering team faced mounting pressure to accelerate development while maintaining the reliability that healthcare demands. The feature backlog kept growing. Regulatory requirements kept evolving.
"Our development cycles were becoming bottlenecks to healthcare innovation," explained Stefan Vogel, Head of Product Development. "We needed to deliver faster while ensuring our existing systems remained bulletproof."
Medgate uses Claude Code to accelerate healthcare product development
Medgate partnered with consulting firm OWT, which has more than 200 experts across Switzerland, to test Claude Code across their development workflow. The solution is built on OWT's development framework, which integrates AI at every stage from requirements definition through testing and deployment. Claude Code delivered the technical capabilities to transform how Medgate's engineers work.
"We evaluated multiple AI coding solutions, but Claude Code's ability to understand complex healthcare domain logic while maintaining code quality standards was exceptional," said Marc Lecoultre, OWT's CTO.
How Claude Code transforms the development workflow
OWT integrated Claude Code into Medgate's development workflows, focusing on core implementation processes. Using Claude Code, the team translated detailed healthcare specifications into working features, reducing development time from weeks to days.
"Claude Code understands our healthcare domain complexity," noted a senior developer. "It generates compliant code, handles medical data validation, and even suggests appropriate error handling for patient-critical scenarios."
The pilot extended beyond coding to project management. Claude Code analyzed Azure DevOps issues and Jira tickets, automatically generating implementation plans and breaking down complex healthcare features into manageable tasks. Business analysts used Claude to create comprehensive technical specifications from stakeholder requirements, ensuring nothing is lost in translation between healthcare professionals, compliance teams, and developers.
"Claude helps us bridge the gap between medical requirements and technical implementation," explained a business analyst. "It suggests edge cases we might miss and ensures our specs account for all regulatory scenarios."
With AI accelerating code generation, the bottleneck in development shifts to review and testing. For pilot projects, OWT required all pull requests to undergo AI-enhanced review before merging. Claude Code analyzed every PR for healthcare-specific concerns: data privacy compliance, medical device regulations, security vulnerabilities, and code quality. The system caught potential issues before they reached production, from data protection violations to performance problems that could affect system reliability.
The outcome
The three-month pilot delivered results across multiple technology areas: analytics platforms processing patient interactions, backend systems, and complex integrations with external healthcare systems.
Claude Code dramatically accelerated test development: writing test cases became 80% faster, API testing improved by 50%, UI testing by 30%, and refactoring tests by 70%. This ensured test coverage met medical device standards while significantly reducing manual effort.
Code quality improved across the board. AI-enhanced reviews caught more potential issues before they reached production, and refactored systems performed more reliably under the demanding conditions of healthcare operations. Refactoring cycles that once took days now complete in hours.
"We're developing at startup speed with enterprise reliability," noted Paul de La Rochefoucauld, Medgate's CTO. "Our ability to respond to changing healthcare needs has been completely transformed."
Following the pilot's success, Medgate has decided to roll out Claude Code and OWT's methodology across their entire engineering organization. The partnership demonstrates how healthcare organizations can accelerate innovation without compromising on the reliability and compliance essential to patient care.
